The Parallel Universe Of Digital Technology & Hands
The Lilies in my garden are long over and their beautiful memory has been digitally preserved here. And as the Summer quietly morphs into Fall, I cannot help but think about the mood each season creates. If Spring is the season of hope and optimism, Summer is the season of growth then Fall is definitely the season of reflecting back on life. In this reflective mood, an interesting article caught my fancy.
It is about the fact that ” all your intelligence isn’t in your brain. You learn through hands “. Then this article cites many examples of what companies and universities are doing to create hands on experience for ” people who spend too much time in digital worlds that it creates an appetite for the physical world “. For example M.I.T. offers a class, “How to Make (Almost) Anything,” which emphasizes learning to use physical tools effectively.
On reading this article, it made me reflect upon my profession as an Architect and the contents of this blog. Although I do not design software, I am however at the user end of many softwares e.g. AutoCAD, Photoshop, Page Maker, MS Word etc. My professional portfolio is fully computerized but through this blog I unravel the joy of creating things with hands. Hence there are paintings, gardening and its by-products, writing etc.
You need to work with hands to experience the sensitivity in design. But you also need to use computers and appropriate software to bring about a digital efficiency in work. So although the Lilies are over I have experienced the joy of painting them with hands here and above. In conclusion, by sharing these paintings with the world, I am silently exhibiting my hand-made parallel universe in a digital medium
