From White To Red
Beneath the layers of writing, painting, gardening etc color is beginning to play a subtle role in this blog. Of late many posts have been inspired by color in nature. Here are a few examples:
June was supposed to be rosy in color and content. But much to my delight, red and white are begging for attention on this blog. But before I begin with them, let me warm you up to it. Currently I am reading a very interesting book titled ‘Imagining India’ by Nandan Nilekani. In it the author mentions that when a group of school students from an Indian village were asked what they wanted to be when they grew up, they replied engineer, doctor, teacher etc. But nobody said farmer, in spite of the fact that they all came from farming families. It made me smile because here in North America, I know many Indian engineers, doctors etc who want to do farming at some point in their life
Its interesting to note how aspirations change with circumstances. Here is a true story of one such individual.
Well, I don’t know much about farming but I do like to experiment with a new crop each year, in my backyard. Last year I planted strawberries. This crop is supposed to last for three years. Last year the young plants produced very few fruits. But this year they have matured in size and are producing 20-30 fruits every 3-4 days (from 25 plants). Below you can see an overview of one patch with 12 plants and a typical plant in full height (about 8″ tall).
You can see their flowers here. As for the journey from white to red, the photos below explain it all. Its absolutely delightful when you spot the red ones!
And now for all red below!
In conclusion, you don’t have to retire to do farming. The same joy can be experienced on a smaller scale, in your own backyard
