Nature & Serendipity

CRW_7335  First red tomato!

The rapidly advancing summer has started reddening the tomatoes in my garden (see above). Its a great pleasure to blog about the serendipity of these treasures. In the pastiche of these thoughts, I would like to tell you about two articles that have recently appeared in The New York Times. Its because they fit very well with the current seasonal forum of this blog.

The first one, titled How to Lick a Slug by Nicholas D. Kristof, is about children loosing touch with nature, in these times. Here is a paragraph that sums the essence of this article:

Paul, a fourth grader in San Diego, put it this way: “I like to play indoors better, ’cause that’s where all the electrical outlets are.” Paul was quoted in a thoughtful book by Richard Louv, “Last Child in the Woods,” that argued that baby boomers “may constitute the last generation of Americans to share an intimate, familial attachment to the land and water.”  Nicholas Kristof wraps up the article with, “ Let’s acknowledge that getting kids awed by nature is as important as getting them reading”. How true!

The second article titled Serendipity, Lost in the Digital Deluge by Damon Darlin, is about the loss of serendipity in the clutter of this digital age. Here are his words:

WE’VE gained so much in the digital age. We get more entertainment choices, and finding what we’re looking for is certainly fast. Best of all, much of it is free. But we’ve lost something as well: the fortunate discovery of something we never knew we wanted to find. In other words, the digital age is stamping out serendipity.

These two articles are being book marked in this post, as they articulate two more reasons for me to blog! May be five years from now, this blog could help some child get in touch with nature and serendepitiously make him or her want to get out and explore the woods more.  Here are a few old posts from this blog, that might just cure the “nature deficit disorder” and the loss of serendipity in one stroke :)

Tying up these two articles, may I add that if you connect with nature, you will gain a limitless supply of serendipity.
